It’s back-to-school time!

In Bellingham, school starts the day after Labor Day, so we’re less than two weeks away from sending off the girls to 1st and 4th grade and Ev to his last year of preschool. I’m still kind of in denial that it’s coming so fast and need to get my act together to get prepped for the first week, which I know will come very, very quickly as we try to pack some last minute summer fun into the next 10-ish days.

We’re so lucky to not have to purchase school supplies for the girls (they’re paid for by the district… amazing!), but there are always a few other things that they need for school… shoes, lunchboxes, backpacks, coats.

Lunchboxes are always fun to update each year, even if it’s not a necessity. My kids tend to thrash their lunchboxes by the time they’re out of school in June — and if you’ve ever been to school with your kids at lunchtime, I’m sure you’ll see why… those suckers take a beating!

I searched high-and-low for cool, unique lunchboxes this year and some of my favorites were from Skip Hop. I especially love that the  characters are unique, so it’s easy for your kiddos to spot their own lunchbox among all of the others in their class, meaning they’re less likely to leave it behind.

I’m a firm believer that moms deserve a little back-to-school treat, too. After all, you just survived an entire summer with your kids. That warrants a reward! I’ve told you about my love for the Skip Hop Duo Diaper Bag before and even though I don’t have any kids in diapers anymore, I still use this bag every day.

When the team at Skip Hop offered to send me a diaper bag, I laughed at first, because I’ve never been a diaper bag mom. I’ve always been a “throw some baby stuff in my gigantic purse” mom. But, having just hauled a million kid-supplies all over town, ruining the handles on one of my favorite purses thanks to the weight, I thought twice about accepting their generous offer.

Plus, how could I resist that cute chevron striped pattern? (I’ve been known to have a bit of an, um, chevron addiction.)

This bag has gone everywhere with us and it withstands the test of three kids, a mom who refuses to carry a diaper bag and all of our crazy adventures. I love that I can sling it over my chest to keep it secure and out-of-the-way when we’re truckin’ it through downtown Seattle or if I have to carry a kiddo to the car. I love the little zippered pockets at the top of the bag that are handy for stashing wet socks from jumping in puddles. And, I really love the built-in Shuttle Clips that allow me to clip it to the handle of my BOB stroller, while still giving me access to the bag.

File this under: Things I wish I had when our kids were small.

When Skip Hop sent me the information about their newly released Walk-Along Stroller Handle, I practically did a little mama dance in my office. Which is Starbucks in Barkley Village. Which would have been awkward. For everyone.

We are on our way out of the stroller phase. Our beloved BOB collects dust on our deck most of the time, as Everett is beyond needing a ride when we go exploring. We do hang-on to it for some of our bigger adventures, especially ones with crowds or if we’re bringing a lot of extra gear with us, but I know that our stroller days are numbered. It’s bittersweet.

Skip Hop Stroller Handle

As a mom of three who were all quite small at one time (Janie was 5 and Meg was just 21-months old when Everett was born), I would have given up at least a week’s worth of lattes to have one of these handles. I can’t tell you how many times I had tricky moments juggling Baby Ev in the stroller, with little Janie and little Meg gripping the sides of the BOB as we conquered the hustle and bustle of downtown Seattle or crossed insane intersections through crosswalks that seemed miles wide. Having a designated spot on the stroller where they knew they could hold on and where I knew they would be holding on, would have been priceless.

I particularly love Skip Hop products because they have the reality of life with kids in mind. Not only are their products reasonably priced (the Walk-Along Stroller Handles retail for $8 each), but they also think about the little things, like how to keep them clean (you can pop these handles on the top-rack of your dishwasher!).
