Katie Loves This: Edition 7

Welcome to February, friends!

Is January always 99 percent busier than you expect it to be? It is for our family.

Here are some favorites that we’ve been stockpiling since our last edition of Katie Loves This. What have you been swooning over since we chatted last?

Katie Loves This- Edition 7

One.
I seem to have an itch to buy a new pair of shoes and I’m loving these New Balance 420 Sneakers (Nordstrom, $70). I wear sneakers at least three days a week and I realized recently that all of mine are bright colors. A pair of black sneakers would be a nice addition. (However, I’ve vowed to not buy any more shoes until I Instagram-sell some of the ones I don’t wear. My shoe closets/baskets/under-the-bed storage containers are stuffed!)

Two.
Does anyone else already have summer on their mind? I certainly do. I’d love to build the kids somewhere to play in our backyard and have fallen in love with this design a million times over. I had pinned it three times, from three different websites, on my Outdoor Spaces Pinterest board and finally hunted down the original post on The Handmade Home. Which I’m now obsessed with via Instagram.

Three.
I’ve had the worst time finding a book to read since the new year. I’ve started and stopped reading a few books (including Lena Dunham’s, which I was just not that into, sadly), which I try very hard not to do. Last night, I started One Plus One by Jojo Moyes and it’s captured my attention. Have you read it?

Four.
Last, but certainly not least, I had to share this post from my lovely friend Nichole, who has also been my editor on-and-off for the past few years. This is her first post with mom.me, a site that I adore, and she nails it with her thoughts on keeping Valentine’s Day simple (SIMPLE!!!) and shares an easy way to do with her Failproof Valentine’s Day Treats.

Mom style: Ankle boots for fall

Ankle Boots for Fall

Yup, I’m the last one to get ankle boots. It’s such a shame.

I do have these Frye boots that I bought years and years ago, before ankle boots came back into style, but they really go above my ankles, so they are more like low-calf boots. I can’t wear them with jeans, just skirts and dresses, which kind of defeats the whole ankle boot movement, right?

These are my top contenders for ankle boots for fall. All available on OnlineShoes.com, of course. Let’s break them down…

Matisse Dodge, Natural, $167 (currently on sale for $156)

I’m not sure that this color goes well with my skin tone (pink and pale), but I do love it and think it would be great with jeans or with black pants. Love the worn-in look and I’ve had Matisse shoes in the past that have been amazing and well-worth the price. The heel is a bit higher than I’d like for an everyday boot, at 1-1/2 inches.

Kork-Ease Velma, Meteora, $185

These are so pretty and since they’re Kork-Ease, I’m sure they are very comfortable, as well. I love the color, which could be worn with practically anything. These are the dressiest of the four pair and I’m not sure that’s what I’m going for.

Clarks Desert Boots, Beeswax Leather, $110

I’ve had my eye on a pair of these for ages. They are obviously much different from the others, being much for casual, but I think that I’d wear them a lot. And, I’m a clumsy girl, so I like the look of that rubber sole!

Frye Anna Outside Zip Shootie, Camel Antique Soft Vintage, $278

Of course, at this price tag, these are my favorite. I know that spending the money on a pair of Frye are worth it, as they literally last forever, but ouch. Nearly $300? I really love that there is a side-zip on these boots, not just for the easy on/off access, but for the look of being able to leave it half-zipped for a more casual feel with jeans.

Which pair are your favorites?

Bottom right: Women’s Birkenstock Gizeh Birko-Flor, OnlineShoes.com, $90

In case you’ve been hiding under a rock that has blocked your view of what everyone and their mother (literally) are wearing on their feet this spring and summer, let me introduce you… or reintroduce you, as the case may be.

Birkenstocks.

For some of you, Birks are new. For many of you, Birks have been in your closet for years and your favorite pair is either getting bumped up into your current shoe rotation more these days, or you’re rocking them with pride, just like you always have.

While I don’t currently own any Birkenstocks, they’ve been in and out of my own shoe closet since I was a teenager. You know, back when I was wearing perfectly ripped in all the right spots vintage, thrifted Levis and the comfiest tee I could find in my dad’s closet. Which is pretty much the same style I’ve been wearing lately. I suppose the ’90s are back after all, aren’t they?

I’ve had my eye on a few pair of Birkenstocks from the selection at OnlineShoes.com to get me through a busy summer with the kids and these are my finalists.

What do you think? Do you own a pair of Birks? Which pair are your faves? Let’s vote on it, shall we?

Mom style: My new favorite sandals

Splendid Sandals from OnlineShoes.com

Surprise, surprise. I’ve fallen in love with a new pair of shoes.

Meet the Splendid Cargo Sandals (OnlineShoes.com, $68).

These beauties arrived last week and it was swoon at first sight. But, you know how sandals can be… sometimes, they look amazing, but they kill your feet. These, however, are like butter from the first time you put them on. They go on super easy and I wore them for hours on Mother’s Day, and yesterday, without even thinking about them.

I’ve been wanting a pair of shoes with an elastic cross-strap like this for a long time (I’d had my eyes on these for years), so when I spotted this pair from Splendid on OnlineShoes.com, I knew they had to come home with me. Plus, I’m obsessed with a neutral shoe right now and that pop of color sealed the deal.

Little did I know that they also had this super fun, bright zipper on the back. (It was a bit hard to selfie the back of my heels with the shoes on…) The zipper does come up a bit high on the back of your heel, but it is covered with leather on the inside of the shoe, so while it is rubbing a bit at the top of my heel, it’s not bugging me or leaving a blister.

The Splendid Cargo Sandal also comes in black, which is a classic alternative to the neon yellow in the pair I have. I admit that I’m very tempted to grab a pair of these as well. Cute with a long black maxi, perhaps?

Which color do you prefer?
The classic black? Or the pair with the pop of neon?

Mom style: It’s going to be hot this week

Not that I really believe the weather forecast, but they keep saying that it’s going to hit 80 degrees later this week. What? That’s crazy. Summer before last, I ditched all of my good sandals and lived in a pair of Tory Burch leather flip-flops and a pair of classic black rubber Havaianas. But, I know that I need to add a new pair of casual sandals to my wardrobe… especially if this nice weather sticks around!

Sandals from OnlineShoes.com

Here are my faves from the new selections on OnlineShoes.com:

1. Elliott Lucca Bona, Aztec Black/White, $79
The pattern caught my eye on these sandals and I love the little gold toe-cap.

2. Sperry Top-Sider Lacie, Sand/Ivory Woven, $75
One of my favorite brands, Sperry never disappoints and they are always comfortable too.

3. Adam Tucker Nina, Fango Velluto Nubuck, $99
This is a new brand to me, but I thought these looked super functional and easy to wear for a busy spring and summer.

4. Matisse Jacob, Black, $89
The dressiest of the bunch, Matisse is another favorite brand and I think these are my personal favorite on the list. The high ankle would look great with dresses.

5. Juil Luna, Pewter, $89
A super simple option (that also comes in a few other colors!), I loved these because they look like butter. And, that pewter color goes with everything.

6. Matisse Hawaii, Black, $60
I thought these could be fun, although I’m not sure what I’d wear them with, as they feel a little young to me. Loving the pattern, matched with the brown leather!

Do you have a go-to sandal for hot weather?

Mom style: Would you wear these shoes?

Gentle Souls from OnlineShoes.com

I came across these shoes (Gentle Souls Maeko Wedge Bootie in Stone Shiny Nubuck) when I was scrolling through the new arrivals at OnlineShoes.com and they caught my eye immediately. But, I can’t tell if I love them… or not. At $250, they’re quite an investment, but I know that Gentle Souls are so comfy and well-made, so I’m sure that they’re worth it.

Mom style: A weekend in Seattle

I’m heading to Seattle this weekend (BY MYSELF! WHAT?) for some serious friend-visiting time and, naturally, that takes a lot of outfit planning. For me, shoe planning comes first, outfit planning follows. Here’s a peek at some of my shoe selections for the weekend away…

OnlineShoes.com

For Friday night dinner with friends:
I was looking for something casual that I could wear on the drive down and head straight to dinner in. Pairing these with my favorite jeans and a tee, with a cute little wool tweed blazer on top. Add messy hair (due to road rage during the drive), a long gold necklace and I’m set. (Splendid Cargo Sandals, $70)

For wine tasting on Saturday:
To be paired with a casual jersey dress and a denim jacket on Saturday for an afternoon wine tasting in Woodinville, these sweet little flat espadrilles will do the trick. They’re casual and comfortable, while also giving me a pulled together look that I’m usually lacking thanks to having a 4-year-old often hanging on my hip. (Sperry Top-Sider Hope Sandals, $60)

For Capitol Hill on Saturday night:
I might regret wearing heels to Capitol Hill on Saturday night. Let’s try that again. I will regret wearing heels to Capitol Hill on Saturday night. But, these are too cute to resist. I love that the back of the shoe comes up high on my ankle an that the wedge isn’t too crazy-high. I’m wearing these with a fun pair of patterned cropped pants on Saturday night. (Nicole Marge Wedges, $109)

For the drive home on Sunday morning:
Sunday morning requires all of the comfort I can muster. I know that the drive home to Bellingham is going to feel long, long, long and I want to be as comfy as possible. I’m a sucker for a pair of colorful kicks with a retro vibe, just like these lifesavers. (The North Face Dipsea 78 Trainers, $80)

5 Things I love at Target: Edition 1

Target Favorites

Like the rest of the world, I adore Target. Who doesn’t these days? These favorites caught my eye as Everett and I did some shopping yesterday.

All items available at the Target in Bellingham, WA on March 15, 2014:

Blue Rain Boots, In-stores only, Near the garden/patio supplies, $15
I thought these were fun and simple for the kids, and at under $20, they’re also a steal. Also available in pink.

Women’s Mossimo Audrey Braided Strap Sandal, $20
I tossed all of my super worn-in sandals at the end of last summer. They had lived long lives and were just worn out. I think I have one pair of black rubber flip-flops and a pair of leather Tory Burch flip-flops left for summer. (sob story, obviously.) I could use one more pair, something a little fancier, to get me through the warm weather days.

Black & White Polka Dot Storage Boxes, In-Stores only, $7 each (Clearance price)
These have caught my eye over and over again at Target. Maybe for storage boxes in the girls’ room? Or the craft closet?

Nate Berkus Decorative Pillow: Silver Triangles, $25
Everett was my pillow model and I nearly took this one home with me, but I wanted two and, alas, there was only one to be found.

Threshold Kilim Square Poufs, $70 (In-store price), $48 (Online sale price)
I need all of these. They are all my favorite and I’m not sure I could ever settle on the one or two that I like best. I had Ev sit on one and it seemed pretty stable, so I wonder if they would work well in the living room, around the coffee table for snacks and coloring? Or, maybe in the kids’ rooms? Does anyone have one? I’d love to hear how they hold up…
